Cool School Tool: Magic School AI

It’s not magic, but it just may make your jaw drop!

If you are a teacher who uses ChatGPT, you probably understand its value in curriculum, instruction, and assessment. However, you also understand an important fact: The program’s output is valuable only when the input (prompt)  is accurate and tailored to your specific needs.

If you sometimes struggle to create prompts that are specific to your needs, I am excited to share a website that will serve as a one-stop resource for all of your AI needs. It is called Magic School AI, and it’s completely free!

The website was created by educators who realize the array of demands that teaching entails. Their main goal is to produce various AI tools that teachers can use to plan their instruction, meet differentiated student learning needs, provide timely, relevant student feedback, communicate effectively with parents, and even create opportunities for a little humor.

Nearly every tool allows teachers to choose a specific grade level and provide information that is necessary to produce an effective output. Make sure to check out all the tools yourself, but below are a few of my favorites:

Curriculum Tools

Unit Plan Generator: Pick the grade level of the students you teach, the unit’s approximate length, the unit title, any context for the program to keep in mind, and even include the standards your school uses…click “Generate” and watch an entire optional unit unfold for daily lessons, including ideas for culminating activities and assessments.

Math Spiral Review: This tool quickly creates a spiral review activity to help teachers understand student’s knowledge level about mathematical concepts. This knowledge can aid in both curriculum and instruction planning.

Instruction Tools

Make it Relevant: Even if they don’t always voice it, students consistently wonder Why are we learning this? Sometimes it’s challenging to make certain skills relevant to them. This tool aids teachers in doing just that! I love that output creates multiple suggestions for teachers to evaluate.

Common Misconception Generator: Use this tool to uncover common misconceptions about virtually any topic you teach. The beauty of the tool is that it also gives suggested strategies for addressing these learning misconceptions with your student.

Assessment Tools

Rubric Generator: Creating a quality rubric from scratch is hard work! This tool gives teachers a rough draft that can be adapted to meet their desired learning objectives. The entire rubric organization is customizable.

Student Work Feedback Tool: Yes, you read that correctly! Enter the grade level of the students you teach, a description of the assignment, the various rubric categories, and then paste the student written work. The program will provide both areas of strength and areas of weakness in the student’s writing. Obviously this cannot be the only feedback a student receives and teachers do need to read all student work, but I have found that the tool definitely brings ideas to light I missed or misassessed during my initial read.

Fun Tool

Education is not supposed to be boring; we can have fun AND learn at the same time. My favorite fun tool is called Colleague Song Generator. Based on information given, it can create text to match the rhythm of any song and artist.

For fun, I simply copied and pasted my biography from the Blueprint Schools website and told the program to generate a song about me to the tune of “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice.
